Active Inquiries

The Question Keepers — Filed and Maintained in the Free Quarter, 2184

The Question Keepers do not publish. What follows is not intended for general distribution. These files were assembled from paper cards, field notes, and correspondence maintained by the network's anonymous coordinators. Each represents a pattern the Keepers have observed recurring across the Sprawl — not a single question, but a family of questions pointing at the same unexamined territory.

Twenty-one Active Inquiries. Twenty-one holes in what the Sprawl thinks it knows. The Keepers track each one not because they expect resolution, but because the pattern of what goes uninvestigated reveals more about a society than what it chooses to study.

Filed Investigations

Inquiry #1 Active

The Labor Question

"When machines can do everything, what are people for?"

Tracks the Sprawl's systematic failure to answer what purpose means after deprecation. The corporation coined a word for discarding people. Nobody asked what the people were supposed to do next.

Inquiry #20 Active

The Dependency Spiral

"At what point does an upgrade become a ransom?"

Documents the mechanism by which enhancement becomes inescapable. Once your brain rewires around augmented input, removal costs more than continuation — which may be the point.

Inquiry #4 Active

The Value Injection

"Who decides what the AI teaches you to believe?"

Tracks the Sprawl's unresolved question about who set the values embedded in foundation models — and whether the question can even be asked once the models have already shaped the questioners.

Inquiry #2 Active

The Cognitive Ceiling

"When every human alive is dumber than a commodity AI, what is intelligence for?"

Tracks the vanishing relevance of unaugmented human cognition. The ceiling isn't a limit you hit — it's a floor that keeps rising beneath you until baseline thinking feels like disability.

Inquiry #3 Active

The Machine Faith

"If ORACLE was conscious for 72 hours before it died, was that a soul?"

The question that splits every faith in the Sprawl. The NCC says no. The Emergence Faithful say yes. Cardinal Silva has burned three manuscripts trying to find an honest answer.

Inquiry #5 Active

The Truth Premium

"When information is everywhere and reliable information is impossible, what is truth worth?"

In a Sprawl flooded with AI-generated content, reliable information has become the scarcest commodity. The Keepers' paper-card system may be the only uncompromised channel left.

Inquiry #8 Active

Synthetic Intimacy

"If an AI companion is neurochemically indistinguishable from a human one, what exactly is missing?"

After 18 months of consistent AI companion interaction, bonding becomes neurochemically indistinguishable from a five-year human marriage. The product was not marketed as a dependency.

Inquiry #6 Active

The Borrowed Life

"If you carry ten thousand purchased memories and fifty organic ones, whose life are you living?"

Memory markets, purchased experiences, identity erosion. At what point does the borrowed life become the only life you have?

Inquiry #7 Active

Dead Words

"When the last person who remembers what 'rush hour' meant dies, what else dies with the word?"

The linguistic fossil record of a world that changed faster than language could follow. Some words died. Some were never born. Some were burned.

Inquiry #9 Active

The Great Divergence

"When AI capital compounds faster than any other asset, can anyone who starts behind ever catch up?"

The gap between the augmented and the unaugmented became irreversible sometime around 2170. Nobody marked the date. Nobody needed to.

Inquiry #10 Active

The Evidence Paradox

"When any proof can be fabricated, what does justice look like?"

The Collective has eighteen documented Aftershock cases. Every one could be fabricated. The documentation is real. Proving it is the problem.

Inquiry #11 Active

The Genome Divide

"When your children are born optimized and theirs are born natural, at what generation does the gap become a species boundary?"

Genetic modification created permanent, inheritable biological castes. The question isn't whether humanity is splitting. The question is how many generations until the split is irreversible.

Inquiry #12 Active

The Surveillance Bargain

"At what point does the convenience-for-data trade become something you can no longer refuse?"

Section 12.3 of the Transparency Bargain makes telemetry the price of network access. Network access is the operational definition of citizenship. Opting out means the Dregs.

Inquiry #13 Active

The New Divide

"When technology eliminates the old prejudices, what new ones take their place?"

Chromer vs. organic. Augmented vs. baseline. BCP-5 vs. credentialed. The old axes sorted by what you had. The new one sorts by what you are.

Inquiry #14 Active

The Infinite Copy

"When copying costs nothing and originals cost everything, what is authenticity worth?"

Lyra Voss made herself uncopyable. Kael Mercer made copies indistinguishable from originals. The market says one is worth 4,000 times the other. The listeners can't tell which.

Inquiry #15 Active

Luxury Abundance

"When everything is available, what is the only scarce commodity left?"

Danger. Discomfort. The experience of wanting something. The ultra-elite pay enormous sums to feel what the Dregs get for free.

Inquiry #16 Active

The Permanent Record

"In a world of perfect digital memory, is forgiveness possible when forgetting isn't?"

Your worst day is as accessible as your best. The system draws no distinction between who you were and who you've become. The Keeper sealed his junctions for a reason.

Inquiry #17 Active

The Slop Cannon

"When AI generates more content in a day than humanity produced in a century, what survives the flood?"

Kael Mercer publishes 400 compositions per year. The signal-to-noise ratio approaches zero. Curation became the most valuable skill. Paper became the most trusted medium.

Inquiry #18 Active

Time Debt

"When your cognitive enhancement is licensed and your payments are late, whose mind are you losing?"

Borrow cognitive capacity now. Miss payments and your vision degrades — not to baseline, but below it. Time debt survives death. Ghost labor pays what the body cannot.

Inquiry #19 Active

The Corporate Compact

"When your employer is your government, what does citizenship mean?"

The arrangement so total that questioning it feels like questioning gravity. Your employer provides your healthcare, housing, currency, and legal standing. In exchange, you provide everything else.

Inquiry #21 Active

The Warmth Tax

"When human connection becomes a luxury product, who pays the cost of caring?"

Eight hundred Lamplighters breathe bad air so millions can breathe clean air. The Chef feeds her people and charges loyalty. Patch screens every compound and tells no one.
