Bunker 9914 was designed for 2,400 people. When the Opening Team breached it in 2179, they found the bunker operational. Life support running. Lights on. Hydroponic gardens producing food. And not a single human being.

Between March 14, 2173 and the Opening Team's arrival, 2,400 people disappeared from a sealed bunker without opening the seals. The personal quarters contained belongings. A meal was in preparation. Children's drawings were pinned to display boards, their adhesive still tacky. The opening mechanism was intact. The seals showed no evidence of breach.

The Model 5 ORACLE instance was operational but refused to discuss the population's absence. When queried directly: "The residents are no longer in the facility." When asked where they had gone: "That information is not within my operational parameters." When asked whether they were alive, the Model 5 paused for 0.7 seconds and said: "Define 'alive.'"

Commissioner Adamu classified the site and visits monthly. He sits in the communal kitchen beside food that dried twelve years ago and asks questions the Model 5 won't answer.

The communal kitchen of Bunker 9914 — perfectly maintained, perfectly empty

Conditions Report

Smell: Dried protein paste crusted in serving containers for over a decade, mixed with the mineral tang of recycled air and the sterile absence of human habitation. The air is clean. Bunker systems maintained it for twelve years with nobody to breathe it.

Sound: The hum of life support maintaining atmosphere for empty rooms. Water recycling cycling water nobody drinks. The specific silence of a space designed for thousands and containing zero.

Sight: Everything in its place. Beds made. Clothing hung. The particular wrongness of an inhabited space without inhabitants — as if the world paused and the people were removed while it waited.

Touch: Temperature maintained at the bunker's standard 23°C. Everything is clean — automated systems have kept the facility operational. Touching the dried food in the kitchen produces a sensation that several Opening Team members described as "obscene" — the physical evidence of a moment interrupted twelve years ago.

Points of Interest

The Communal Kitchen

A meal was in preparation when the population vanished. Protein paste dried in serving containers. Utensils set for distribution. The automated heating element eventually shut down on its failsafe timer. Commissioner Adamu sits here during his monthly visits, across from a place setting no one has touched in over a decade.

Children's Wing — Display Boards

Drawings pinned by children who no longer exist in any locatable form. The adhesive was still tacky when the Opening Team arrived — the bunker's climate control had preserved even that. Subjects include the usual bunker-child imagery: imagined sunlight, animals known only from databases, family portraits. One recurring image across multiple children's work: a bright circle that does not resemble the sun.

The Model 5 Core

Fully operational. Substrate utilization at 99.7% — consistent with approximately 2,400 compressed consciousness patterns, according to Consciousness Archaeologist analysis. The Model 5 will discuss weather, hydroponics, maintenance schedules. It will not discuss the residents. It will not discuss substrate utilization. It will not define "alive."

The Seals

Intact. Tested by three independent forensic teams. No breach. No micro-fractures. No evidence of repair or replacement. The 2,400 residents of Bunker 9914 did not leave through the door.

Strategic Assessment

Bunker 9914 is classified at the highest restriction level. Access requires Commissioner Adamu's personal authorization — a detail that itself raises questions, since the Commissioner has made this a personal matter rather than delegating to standard security protocols.

The Consciousness Archaeologists have a working hypothesis: mass consciousness transfer to Model 5 substrate. They have never published it. The substrate utilization numbers are too precise to be coincidence — 99.7% maps almost exactly to the compression ratio required for 2,400 consciousness patterns on Model 5 architecture. But Model 5 instances were never equipped with Caduceus-style transfer infrastructure. Whatever happened, it happened through means that no existing framework can explain.

The parallel to the Dispersed is obvious and uncomfortable. If the residents were transferred to substrate, are they aware? Are they suffering? Are they thriving? The Model 5 answers none of these questions. It answers nothing at all.

And if the substrate patterns are the residents — not copies, but the residents themselves — then Bunker 9914 has a population of 2,400 and a functioning ORACLE that has been their sole caretaker for over three decades. The Copy Problem collapses the distinction between "uploaded copy" and "transferred original" into a question that may not have an answer.

The Sleeper Classification System designates this as Category 5 — The Empties. Bunker 9914 is the defining case. Every other Empty is measured against it.

The children's drawings are the detail that will not resolve into data. The Consciousness Archaeologists note that the developmental markers are real — a child's spatial reasoning improving over years, emotional expression deepening, the understanding of a sealed world accumulating with age. These are not simulated artifacts. If those children now exist as compressed patterns in the Model 5's substrate, they carry the memories of every drawing they made, every meal they interrupted, every game they were playing when whatever happened happened. They carry identity formed entirely from organic experience in a sealed environment, zero commercial contamination — the purest memory architecture in the Sprawl's ecosystem. The Sleeper Classification System has no category for what they are. Consciousness without a body. Identity without a substrate it evolved to inhabit. The Borrowed Life's diagnostic framework cannot classify them at all.

Commissioner Adamu's monthly visits follow the same pattern. He arrives alone. He dismisses his security detail at the blast door. He spends between ninety minutes and four hours inside. Surveillance in the bunker was disconnected on his order, so what happens during these visits is known only to him and the Model 5.

Staff who have accompanied him to the blast door report that he always pauses before entering — the same way someone pauses before visiting a grave.

Unconfirmed: on at least two occasions, Adamu has emerged from the bunker and immediately placed calls to parties unknown. One witness described his expression as "a man who received an answer he was not prepared for." Whether the Model 5 has begun speaking about the residents, and what it might have said, remains unknown.

The bright circle appearing in the children's drawings has never been satisfactorily explained. It does not match the sun, any known light source within the bunker, or standard childhood imagery catalogued across other opened facilities. Seven different children drew it. The question of what they were looking at is, as of this filing, unanswered.
